NICKELBACK DEBUTS AT #1, SELLING A WHOPPING 323K

Rockers, Twanger, Rappers and Apple Make for a Very Mixed Bag
Regardless of whether it’s for all the right or wrong reasons, Roadrunner/IDJ’s Nickelback took the #1 spot this week with their new All the Right Reasons LP selling an awe-inspiring 323k, which was way more than anybody even anticipated. Representing the twang side of things is RCA Nashville’s Ms. Sara Evans, who secured the #2 position, with 125k, putting her 5k above fellow twanger Gretchen Wilson (Epic Nashville), who took #3, with 120k, which is certainly enough to keep our favorite Redneck gal all jacked up and in Skoal for months to come.

Atlantic/Atl G’s Twista hasn’t yet learned to properly spell that game we all knew and loved as kids, but it didn’t stop this developing rap supa sta from selling 118k, putting him at #4 and one position above Roc-A-Fella/IDJ’s Kanye West, the phenomenon who just doesn’t seem to subside. The honorable Mr. West jumped from #6 to #5 this week (could it have something to do with all those Republican scandals?), selling 89k copies of his bear-lovin’ release.

Looks like it was worth the long wait for fans of Epic’s Fiona Apple who hit the halfway mark on this week’s Top 10, selling 83k copies of an album that many thought would never see the light of day. Those in the know say her brother, Banana, is very proud! Like Kanye West, the Black Eyed Pease refuse to leave the Top 10, with the A&M/Interscope act jumping from #10 to #7, with 80k, a boost that probably owes nothing to them being satirized on last weekend’s Saturday Night Live...but we thought we’d gratuitously mention it anyhow.

Rounding out the bottom of the Top 10 are Slip-N-Slide/Atlantic’s lovely Trina, who debuts #8, with 75k; Epic’s Franz Ferdinand, who debut #9 with their still rhythmic groove-heavy sophomore release selling 74k; and Warner Bros.Faith Hill, who saw her sales jump a whopping 169%, jumping from #38 to #10, with 74k sold. The spike follows an appearance on Oprah’s show...and could possibly have something to do with her not appearing on Dr. Phil.

Other notable debuts: Fo Yo Soul/Jive/ZLG’s Kirk Franklin at #12, with 68k; Island/IDJ’s Melissa Etheridge at #14, with 66k; Atlantic/Atl G’s Shinedown at #17, with 55k; Capitol Nashville’s Chris Cagle at #22, with 45k; Maverick’s Deftones at #28, with 37k; Universal South’s Cross Canadian Ragweed at #32, with 34k; Lava/Atl G’s O.A.R. at #33, also with 34k; and Capitol’s Liz Phair coming in at #49, with 23k.

Watch next week for debuts from Alicia Keys, Ricky Martin and Gary Allen.
