WHEELS & DEALS:
CHASING THE SUMMER HEAT

Test Your Reflex, Aderbat, The Films, AbsentStar, The Outline and, of Course, the Usual Cast of Weasels
The turn of the Memorial Day holiday is the kickstart of the summer, so here’s our `05 Q2 update of what’s happening on the weasel-derby platter and in artist signings… Nashville buzz band Be Your Own Pet continues to be the focus of an intense label derby. A&R folks from both coasts descended on Nashville recently to catch a show. And contrary to reports, the band has not signed with a label yet. So expect maximum weaseltude at their upcoming L.A. show at the Troubadour on June 17…

Lots of buzz building on L.A. band Test Your Reflex. We hear that A&R folks in Tinseltown have been dropping by the band’s rehearsal studio for a little meet-and-greet due to the strength of their demos. We hear one label is already in…

Lots of label folks at the Aderbat show at Pianos in N.Y. this week. Reps from Capitol, Universal, RCA, Hollywood, Warner Bros., ATO, Sire, Lava, Epic, Atlantic, Columbia, Chrysalis, Razor & Tie, EMI Music and Windswept, among others, were out…

The Kevin Held-managed/Kia Kamran-repped The Films are finalizing a deal after being courted by several majors. The South Carolina-based group signs with Perry Watts-Russell and Tom Whalley at the bunny… There was some whirlwind courting going on with the Reid Hunter-repped Brendan James, who showcased and met with labels on both coasts but was taken off the market by Capitol…

Chicago band AbsentStar is apparently getting some label love after showcasing for a bevy of weasels. Expect a New York label trip soon. And you can check `em out during Mobfest on June 23 at the Double Door, if they’re still available…

The David Surnow/Chris Fudurich-repped The Outline have signed a pub deal with Greg Sowders and Stephanie St. Gal de Pons at Warner/Chappell Music

SHAMELESS PLUG: Lastly, EMI Music Publishing’s Jody Gerson has upped Dan McCarroll to Vice President Creative West Coast. His signings at the pubco have included Death Cab for Cutie, Butch Walker, The Academy Is, Aslyn and Nashville hit songwriter Steve McEwan. But check this: McCarroll is also Director of A&R at Capitol Records, where his primary responsibility is spit-shinning Andy Slater’s tap shoes. Prior to his current posts, McCarroll was a top session drummer for the likes of Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn, among others. He was also head of A&R for Lars Ulrich’s record label, The Music Company, and he has the record for the shortest employment time at HITS, with the biggest parlay to a pub/label gig. Congrats dude!…
