In Case of Love, Break Glass: Collage Dance Theatre celebrates WeHo’s 20th anniversary with a performance that takes place on the Emser Tile building. Yes, on it. A lush video projection serves as the backdrop & the dancers climb the twin fire escapes in a piece promising to reveal “the twists and turns of love—its rise and fall, risks and promise.” I’d be a nervous wreck watching them; it sounds very Fear Factor-ish. Tix $20. Also at
The Standard, Hollywood: Sure it’s trendy, sure there’s a too-cool-for-school model chick/dude in the glass box behind the desk, sure folks on the patio can see your silhouette while you use the bathroom…we still dig it. Love the blue Astroturf around the pool and view of the city. Food is priced well, drinks are ridiculously overpriced—but hey, it’s the Strip, baby. Hey look, there’s Owen and Vince.

L.A. Art Fest: With hundreds of booths and participating galleries, more bands than you can take in at one sitting and some mind-scratching left-field art presentations, this might just become one of L.A.'s most rewarding festivals. Fireworks kick off the fest's gala opening, and seven 40-foot helium angels are let loose into the sky, serving notice that something strange is afoot in L.A. Wow, cool!!

Keeping Your Head Down: My sainted father John F Gleason Jr. used to say, "As in golf, as in life," and it has held truer than any conventional wisdom I've ever embraced. He also said, "If you wanna know a man, get him on the golf course," because one can't hide their true nature, along with the ever-ready practice-range admonition that spoke volumes about bigger-picture conduct: "Your fundamentals tell you everything about what you need to be doing." So after a particularly troublesome trip to the driving range, it occurs to me that the simplest law of life is the very thing I needed to remember: Keep your head down. Just stay in your swing. Do what you know. Don't even think. Just stay solid. Don't waver. Your swing will be there. "As in golf, as in life," indeed.

Cinderella Man
Starring: Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger, Paul Giamatti, Craig Bierko, Bruce McGill, and Paddy Considine
Synopsis: Depression-era boxer Jim Braddock is just a regular Joe who starts taking fights to feed his wife and family, but as he piles up unlikely victories, he becomes a national hero whose spectacular comeback inspires the nation.
Thoughts: I really have been looking forward to this movie since I saw the previews awhile back. Russell Crowe seems to be on a roll of late, and this movie looks to continue that streak. The buzz has been incredible—plus it’s directed by Ron Howard. so you know its gonna be good.
Lords of Dogtown
Starring: Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson, Michael Angaran, Nikki Reed, Heath Ledger, Rebecca De Mornay andJohnny Knoxville
Synopsis: Like the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, only in fictional form, Lords of Dogtown chronicles the adventures of the crew of 1970s
Thoughts: I never saw the documentary, but for some reason I am kind of curious to see this movie. The coming attractions make it look really good. It could be one of those fun summer movies—either that or really suck.
