ONE DAY SALES: BETWEEN ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

Rockers Will Rule Next Week, but the X-Factor Turns Out to Be Oprah Winfrey
It’ll be rock’s turn on next week’s chart, with the hard-edged, pierced and tatted Disturbed (Reprise) currently holding the post position. The band is in line to move 225k-250k units, which should be enough for #1. But hold on a second. Bon Jovi (Island/IDJ) is trending at around 175k right now, but the Oprah Factor could come into play big-time, as the empress of afternoon devotes the entire hour today to John, Richie and the boys, who have will give her a $1 million check for her favorite charity during the show. The bounce Bon Jovi gets from the appearance could put them in position to wrest the top spot from Disturbed, so, as they say, stay tuned.

Ascendant prog rockers Coheed & Cambria (Columbia) are rocketing toward the 100k range with the latest episode of their saga, putting them into the Top 5 mix. The Oprah bounce could also impact J/RMG’s Luther Vandross tribute album, following yesterday’s show, which featured Usher and Patti LaBelle singing their covers from the album. Hence, that 80k could jump to more than 100k, putting the trib in a battle with Coheed.

The fifth and sixth big bows will come from Columbia’s Barbra Streisand, who’s heading toward 80k-90k, but Babs is all over the tube this week, so who knows (certainly not us dweebs). And SRC/Universal Gulf Coast rapper David Banner is lined up for 85k-90k.

Music sales for the week were up by 4.9%, or 467k units, over week—yippie! Music sales for the week were down by 3.1%, or 322k units, compared to the same week of 2004—bummer. More bummers: year-to-date sales, which now total 394.6 million units, are down 8.5%, or 36.8 million, vs. last year. If stacked on top of each other, that’s enough CDs to reach Uranus. Not sure about that last part.
