ONE MORE #1 MAKES IT SIX FOR 50

Faith Comes Close But Finishes #2, as
Lisa Marie Bows Top 10
For the sixth week in a row, 50 Cent’s The Massacre (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) sits at the top of the album chart. But the gap between #1 and #2 is narrowing.

Indeed, this week’s #2 album, Faith EvansFirst Lady (Capitol) came within 7,500 units of stealing 50’s crown, moving just over 155k, compared to 50’s weekly total of just under 163k. It was too close to call until just before the chart closed, but the G-Unit kingpin managed to pull it off one more time.

It looks like the end of the line for his run at #1, however, because early retail snapshots give Mariah Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi (Island), released today (4/12), a solid shot at selling over 300k for the week.

Meanwhile, the week’s second-highest debut was Lisa Marie Presley’s Now What at #8. That gives Capitol two Top 10 debuts in the same week—and the new Coldplay is still almost two months away.

Of last week’s string of Top 5 debuts from Universal Music Group (which, with 50 at #1, gave UMG the entire Top 5), only Beck remains there, as Guero (Interscope) slips #2-#4 on sales of just under 73k. Now 18 (Epic) and Green Day’s American Idiot (Reprise) fill in positions three and five, respectively.

The week’s biggest sales increase goes to Joss Stone’s Mind, Body & Soul (S-Curve/EMC), which shot up from outside the Top 50 to #19 on sales of over 35k (a 157% gain!), thanks to her appearance on Oprah last week. Similarly, trumpeter Chris Botti saw his When I Fall in Love (Columbia) re-enter the Top 50 at #46 thanks to a rebroadcast of his Oprah appearance.

Other notable chart debuts include Donnie McClurkin’s Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs (Zomba), #11 on 53k sold, and Brandy’s best-of set, #29 on just under 26k.

Next week, it’s all about the aforementioned Ms. Carey, along with Epic’s Mudvayne and Interscope’s Garbage.
