CHICKS STILL RULE, PART DEUX

Gals Still Stealing Spotlight, Getting All Kinds of A&R Attention
By Rodel Delfin

Just when you thought teen-pop-princess signings were on their way out, a few more femme acts hit the spotlight thanks to some good ol' film & TV exposure. With Lindsay Lohan signing to Tommy Motola's Casablanca Records several weeks ago and Ashlee Simpson's whopping first-week sales on her Geffen debut, it's evident that the female teen-pop appeal continues strong with consumers and with labels. World's End players Sandy Roberton and Andrew Brightman add another major label signing to their artist-development resume as teen pop singer Candace signs with Guy Oseary and Kevin Williamson at Maverick Records. Requests for label meet-and-greets and an East Coast trip were in the works when the songstress was taken off the market by Oseary. The Florida native had completed tracks produced by American Hi-Fi band member Stacy Jones... Meanwhile, word on the street is that the derby for the Kent Marcus-repped Haley Williams has ended with Jason Flom, Tom Storms and Steve-O Robertson at Atlantic... Heavy label turnout for Aussie rockers The Casanovas last week in New York. The band's self-titled debut album has been released in New Zealand, Australia and Japan, but has yet to be released stateside. The buzz on the heavily AC/DC-influenced rockers prompted A&R folks from RCA, Atlantic, Lava, Sire, Sony, Virgin, among others to check them out... Looks like indie label Fueled By Ramen is finalizing a deal with Warner Music Group. The indie, which is home to acts such as Fall Out Boy, The AKA's, the Stereo, Punchline, among others, had several label group suitors lookin' to make a deal. Barrister Mike McKoy mediated the weaseltude. Meanwhile, what Fueled By Ramen act is creating a big buzz among A&R circles in N.Y. after tracks from their recently completed record started to circulate? The band is reportedly committed to the label for two records... Lots of talk about this week's impressive debut from Victory Records act Taking Back Sunday as the band's LP Where You Want to Be debuts #3 on the HITS Album Sales chart. Meanwhile, major label attention now picking up again on another Victory act, Atreyu. We've been keeping an eye on this one since last summer. Touring and sales without radio. What a concept... Lastly, that trash-takin', street-hustla Sean E. has cut an imprint deal with Universal Records for his Execution Style Entertainment label. If he owes you some money, you can hit him up at [email protected]... Meanwhile, word on the street is that the Sean E.-managed Lo-Mass Republic has been getting some label interest since being released from their Arista deal (with finished record in hand) when the label closed its doors... BUZZIN: Mae and Squatcho... Hit me up: [email protected]
