NORAH, SPRINGSTEEN TOP
HITS GRAMMY POLL

Website Voters Go For Norah in Three of Top Four Categories, Springsteen Leads in Two Others
Norah Jones doesn’t need us to remind her to get that Grammy acceptance speech ready, but she did top three of the top four categories in HITS’ very unscientific online poll.

Jone’ "Don’t Know Why" topped Bruce Springsteen’s "The Rising" by a slim four-percentage-point margin, 31% to 27%, for Song of the Year, one of three categories HITS voters picked her to win in this Sunday’s Grammy awards from New York City. Jones and Springsteen were trailed by Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" (20%), Alan Jackson's 'Where Were You..." (11.2%) and Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" (10.7%).

With 37%, Springsteen’s The Rising edged Norah’s Come Away With Me (27%) for Album of the Year, with The Eminem Show finishing a close third at 26%. Dixie ChicksHome (8%) and Nelly’s Nellyville (2%) were a distant fourth and fifth.

Jones’ "Don’t Know Why" was the winner for Record of the Year, with 40% of the vote, topping Eminem’s "Without Me" (27%), Vanessa Carlton’s "A Thousand Miles" (14%), Nelly & Kelly Rowland’s "Dilemma" (11%) and Nickelback’s "How You Remind Me" (8%).

Jones also easily topped the Best New Artist nominees, with 53% of the vote, more than doubling her closest pursuer, Avril Lavigne (22.5%), followed by a tie between Ashanti and John Mayer (both at 8.9%), and Michelle Branch (6.5%).

Hip-hop icon Dr. Dre took the Producer of the Year category with 53%, followed by Arif Mardin (for Norah at 19%), Rick Rubin (12%), Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (11%) and Nelee Hooper (4%).

Springsteen’s The Rising took the Best Rock Album category easily, with 69% of the tallies, followed by Grammy perennial Sheryl Crow’s C’mon C’mon at 22%.

Best Alternative Album was a landslide for Coldplay’s A Rush of the Blood to the Head with 71% of the vote over Beck’s Sea Change at 17%.

India.Arie will rebound from her Grammy shutout last year in the Best R&B Album race, according to HITS Grammy Poll voters, with her Voyage to India nabbing 55% of the vote, leaving only Musiq’s Juslisen (Just Listen), at 20%, in the same ballpark.

Eminem’s The Eminem Show was a prohibitive winner in the Best Rap Album field, with 76% of the tally, over Nelly’s Nellyville at 19%.

Finally, in the all-important Best Polka Album competition, it was a very tight race, with Jimmy Sturr at 26%, leading a closely grouped field which includes LynnMarie (22%), Walter Ostanek and his Band (20%), Eddie Blazonczyk’s Versatones (18%) and Jerry Darlak & the Touch (15%). And, if that doesn’t add up to 100, just attribute it to the category.
