TOM GREEN, NICK LACHEY AND
JESSICA SIMPSON TOP MTV SLATE

New Shows Greenlit for Spring, Pilots or Development Include Jackass Spinoff, Paula Abdul Cheerleading Show, When I Was 17
A talk show featuring old standby Tom Green and a reality series starring Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson top the list of MTV shows slated for summer, announced by MTV/VH1 Brian Graden.

Coming off its highest-rated first quarter in history, Graden unveiled several greenlights as well as MTV’s 2003 development slate for original programming. EVP Series & Animation John Miller; EVP Series & Movie Development Lois Curren; EVP Music & Talent Programming Tom Calderone and EVP News & Production Dave Sirulnick are overseeing the array of new projects in development for the network, which include several reality shows and news series.

Graden says the network remains committed to an "accelerated development process covering a breadth of diverse projects." Or, in other words, if it doesn’t fly, it’s bye-bye. With today’s development announcement, which includes reality, comedy, music and news, the programming exec insists, "MTV is meeting the ever-changing entertainment needs of its audiencethe true trend-setters in television viewing.

"Our new slate of shows represents our ongoing commitment to ambitious, dynamic programming. We have always taken pride in our ability to document moments in culture. These new projects represent our continued interest in capturing our audience’s lives, and the issues and people that are important to them, in new and meaningful ways. As we come off our highest-rated first quarter ever, we’re more dedicated than ever to providing our audience with the programming they respond to. Cue those exploding firecrackers, Steve-O."

The two new projects being greenlit include:

The untitled Jessica Simpson/Nick Lachey project: Newlyweds Lachey and Simpson spend their first year together trying to get settled as the MTV cameras roll from the bedroom to the breakfast table to the recording studio. Called I Love Lucy...without the script or Fred and Ethel! Premieres August ’03

A talk show hosted by Tom Green: The world’s wackiest comic returns to his roots that will begin with Tom walking out on the set and talking about the events going on in his own life. Featuring interviews with celebrity guests and Tom’s "candid views on funny things that are going on in the world today." Look out, Jimmy Kimmel. Premieres June 16 at 12 a.m.

The following shows have been greenlit for pilot:

High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks, and Controversies: In the pilot, MTV News explores a prank at a Florida high school in which 12 students unleashed 80,000 bees on their school, what stopped the prank from happening, and the consequences for the students involved. Premieres April 16 at 5 p.m. as part of TRL High School Week.

Untitled Bam Margera Project: Reality series follows the life of Jackass cast member as Bam plays pranks upon his unsuspecting parents, gets visits from his outrageous friends, and inspires chaos with this hilarious glimpse into his daily life. Premieres August ’03

The Scene: A group of young people try to fulfill their dreams and achieve notoriety in this multi-part verit series against the backdrop of the music club scene, created by journalist Heidi Sigmund Cuda.

RooMATES: In this reality/game show, one person in search of the perfect mate is let loose inside three different bedrooms to get clues about their prey’s looks and personality. Produced by Granada Factual, one of the UK’s leading reality production companies.

Posse: This pilot chronicles the lives of those who know what it’s really like to be best friends with a superstar! Each week, the show will visit a different entourage and get to know the people behind the famous people and find out what their lives are like inside the inner sanctum of fame.

Also in development at MTV are an untitled Blink-182 project; a Paula Abdul reality cheerleading show; a female making-the band program; a daily dance series hosted by choreographer to the boy bands Wade Robson, a reality show featuring lifeguards; and Homewrecker, with a house boobytrapped by the producers, who manipulate the contestants until a finalist emerges in a show brought to you by the people behind Weakest Link.
