ROADKILL: MAKE WAY FOR THE SUMMER OF LOOT

Metallica/Limp Bizkit/Linkin Park Package Leads Parade of Upcoming Major Tours
The upcoming touring season is shaping up to be one of the more competitive summers in recent memory, as some major A-list bands pack their bags and prepare for extended road work.

Metallica, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park have announced that they’ll join forces for what’s been dubbed the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003. Each act on the tour has a new album due this year. Mudvayne and the Deftones have also been confirmed for the package.

Before embarking on the monster tour, Metallica will appear at a number of European summer festivals, while Linkin Park will head out on their own arena tour with Jurassic 5 and Mudvayne.

Metallica are currently in the studio finishing up their eighth studio album, to be titled St. Anger and due in stores on June 10. It’s their first studio release since 1997’s Re-Load. Linkin Park’s sophomore release, Meteora, is set for a March 25 release, while Limp Bizkit’s Lessismore is expected to hit in May. Deftones are currently putting the finishing touches on their as yet untitled fourth longplayer, with Terry Date once again producing.

If alternative rock is your thing, you’re in luck, cuz Lollapalooza organizers will be rolling out the traveling circus again this year, for the first time since 1997. The 2003 edition will feature a re-formed Jane’s Addiction, Audioslave, Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age and Jurassic 5.

And that’s not all, folks. This year, perennial moneymaker Ozzfest once again boasts the services of founder Ozzy Osbourne and his former mates in Black Sabbath, while Warped features top punk acts Pennywise, the Used, the Distillers, AFI, Rancid, Mest and Simple Plan, with Blink-182 tentatively showing up for a few select dates. And Disturbed will head out on its Music as a Weapon trek, which also features Chevelle, Taproot and Unloco.

Aging hard rockers have their choice of the KISS-Aerosmith package or an Iron Maiden-Judas Priest pairing that brings the two metal bands together for the first time since 1983. There is also a Scorpions-Whitesnake-Dokken fest tailor-made for the Tawny Kitaen-loving black T-shirt connoisseur. For the mellower minded, there's the Journey-Styx-REO Speedwagon nostalgia fest.

But wait, there’s more. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band will be hitting stadiums on the East Coast; tickets go on sale in two weeks. Fleetwood Mac, the highest-priced ticket, and the Eagles, the second hightest-priced ticket, will also hit the road. And for the Bud Scoppas of the world, a John Mayer-Counting Crows outing is in the works.

For the pop minded, there is the highly anticipated Christina Aguilera-Justin Timberlake outing. The Dixie Chicks will capitalize on their growing popularity by touring arenas this summer, while Tim McGraw is also hitting the arena circuit.

Summer, of course, isn’t the only time of year that acts go on the road. This month, rapper Common is set to headline a North American tour, with supporting acts including Talib Kweli, Gang Starr and Floetry.

Others hitting the road include Bon Jovi, Santana, Matchbox Twenty, Norah Jones, ZZ Top and the Foo Fighters. A lot of attention will also be given to the upcoming 50 Cent tour.

And if that ain't enough, Shania Twain goes out toward the end of the year.
