SONY TO SUPERSIZE ONLINE SERVICE

Connect to Cook Up Deal With McDonalds
Would you like to supersize that? Would you like to digitally download a song with that? Is that for here or to go?

Expect to hear those questions when you go for that delicious, nutritious meal at McDonalds later this year. Sony’s upcoming Connect online music store is set to pact with Mickey D’s to give away downloads, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The paper says that McDonalds will spend $30 million in advertising. For its $30 million, McDonalds will purchase tracks at a discount and then give away those songs to customers who order specific items from the menu. Say, a free song for ordering a Filet-O-Fish. Customers who order those specific items will get codes they can plug in online.

If that concept sounds familiar, perhaps the Pepsi-Apple deal to give away 100 million songs with free songs codes under bottle caps. Sony is reportedly planning on giving away more than 100 million songs in this promotion.

Sony’s Connect, set to open online this spring, will charge 99 cents per download. The download site has already pacted with United Airlines, allowing fliers to trade frequent flier miles for songs. The paper said the McDonalds deal will be announced next week.

For those fast-food/music junkies who can’t wait, KFC is the latest company to use LidRock, which puts a CD in soda drink lids. Now at the chicken chain resatraunts in New York and Atlanta, drinkers of 32-ounce will get a three-track disc with Pharrell Williams f/Jay-Z’s “Frontin’,” the new N.E.R.D. single and a song from Kelis for an additional 99 cents. No downloading necessary and it’s finger-lickin’ good.
