NARM RETAIL SUMMIT URGES COMMUNICATION
NYC Confab Talks Of a Return to Singles, Year-Round Product Flow

The need for better communication with the consumer was identified as retail’s top priority as NARM held its most recent retail summit last week in New York City, marking the departure of longtime head Pam Horovitz to the Association of Innkeepers.

Some 80 attendees culled from retail, wholesale, distribution and labels met in the second such summit held over the last year. Other topics included the need to reintroduce songs into the marketplace, both in digital and physical formats, and better educate the consumer that singles are once again available.

There was also a call to create a promotional campaign to promote the value of music to consumers and conduct an independent economic analysis comparing direct-to-consumer Advertising with in-stores and other types of co-op promotions.

Most agreed to the need to embrace New Technology and that music must be licensed for digital distribution throughout the supply chain. A year-round product flow was a hot topic as well as a more aggressive strategy for marketing and promoting catalog.

There is no word yet as to when the next of these summits, which are effectively replacing the annual "Mini"-NARM, will reconvene. What used to be the major spring edition of the NARM convention has now been permanently moved to August, and will convene next
