OUTKAST, DAVE MATTHEWS STICK, DA BAND STRIKES UP

Coming off major debuts that saw first-week totals at or near the half-million mark, this week’s Top 2 should hold steady for another week, according to early reports from national accounts.

Indeed, #1 OutKast, which logged a heady 509k-plus first week for Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (Arista) and #2 Dave Matthews, whose Some Devil (RCA) made a 475k bow, should maintain their respective positions with sales in the mid-200k range, making it a second big week for BMG.

But wait: Here comes Bad Boy/Universal’s Da Band, hot off their turn with P. Diddy on MTV’s Making the Band. Their debut album, Too Hot for TV, is outpacing expectations in a major way and should do over 200k for the week, making it the likely #3 on next week’s chart.

Other new releases registering on the sales-o-meter include Dido’s Life for Rent (Arista) and Sting’s Sacred Love (A&M), each of which should do over 150k for the week. And Martina McBride’s Martina is shaping up to be another strong Top 10 debut for Nashville’s RCA Label Group, with sales likely to reach upwards of 125k.

Someone had better pinch us—this almost feels like momentum.
