ELVIS STILL KING!!!

Chart-topping Debut Spectacular as 30 #1 Hits Passes 500,000
Half a million Elvis fans can’t be wrong.

There were a number of sightings of the King at record retail stores nationwide, as RCA’s 30 #1 Hits had Elvis Presley fans all shook up to the tune of more than 516k in sales.

That’s a helluva lot of fried banana and peanut butter sandwiches, folks. Uh-huh.

Fred Meyer’s Brian Stevens shot out his TV screen, ordered 1,298,876 dozen crullers before easing our suspicious minds and barking like a hound dog: "Elvis lives! The new package is absolutely a huge success, showing that America’s love affair with the King is still as strong as ever. RCA deserves a lot of credit for a flawless launch. Now, if only they could get Elvis to do some in-stores, I think we could move even more albums."

The impressive total was more than enough to top Open Wide/Columbia/CRG’s Dixie Chicks (#2), Arista’s Avril Lavigne (#3), Reprise’s Disturbed (last week’s #1, now #4), Fo’Reel/Universal’s Nelly (#5) and Aftermath/Interscope’s Eminem (#6).

The rest of the Top 10 included four critically acclaimed artists in Motown/Universal multiple-Grammy nominee India.Arie (#7), Columbia/CRG rapper Nas (#8), Geffen avant-pop god Beck (#9) and veteran art-rock labelmate Peter Gabriel (#10). The last two give UMG five of the week’s Top 10 albums.

Added Stevens, making himself at home with Priscilla and Elvis’ karate instructor: "The marketplace for adults shows no signs of slowing down. Upper demos were snapping up Beck and the long-awaited Peter Gabriel as well. And with the Rolling Stones coming next week, we should have another banner week for baby boomers. Hey dude, where’s my Volvo?"

Other chart debuts came from Universal’s Pastor Troy (#17), Lost Highway’s Ryan Adams (#22), MCA’s R&B-flavored Brown Sugar soundtrack (#24), Rounder/IDJ’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack, Columbia’s Travis Tritt (#39) and Lava/Atlantic Group’s Uncle Kracker (#47).

Aside from the Stones’ two-CD Virgin compilation, Forty Licks, expect chart debuts next week by Curb’s LeAnn Rimes, Loud/Columbia/CRG hip-hopper Xzibit and Verve jazz chanteuse Diana Krall’s live album.
