PLAIN DEALING FOR UNSIGNED ARTISTS, BABY

Radio Free Virgin, CD Baby Deals Give Aspiring Artists an Edge Online
Unsigned artists have some new online options in the never-ending battle for exposure. Which means more crap for you Web-surfing weasels to wade through.

Radio Free Virgin has partnered with online artist community Just Plain Folks Music Organization for an unsigned music channel. Artists who register with JPF will be eligible for inclusion in the RFV channel. BFD.

"Through our relationship with Just Plain Folks, we're taking a major step towards providing aspiring artists with commercial opportunities on the Internet," swore RFV GM Zack Zalon, "as well as help to widen their fan base through our large listening audience. OK, there are no commercial opportunities on the Internet. But hey, exposure is exposure."

"Just Plain Folks is an organization open to all aspiring artists at any level of career development," noted JPF founder Brian Austin Whitney. Wow, this is sounding more enticing all the time.

Meanwhile, popular grass-roots e-tailer CD Baby has pacted with manufacturer Disc Makers to distribute recordings by the latter's clients. CD Baby has gained renown as a reliable source of independent music, as well as a company that actually generates revenue for artists. CD Baby recently announced it had paid out a total of $1 million to unsigned acts since its formation in 1997.

The online store also allows artist-vendors the opportunity to track sales info on the Web, the ability to take orders by credit card or via 800 number, a dedicated Web page with sound samples and links and—best of all, $6-$12 per CD sold.

Disc Makers clients will have a chance to sign up with CD Baby via a coupon included in the company's "Aftercare" production kit. The offer includes the waiving of CD Baby's registration fee.

"We are very pleased to be able to offer CD Baby's services to Disc Makers' clients," said Disc Makers VP Sales and Marketing Tony van Veen. "[Founder/CEO] Derek Sivers and the staff of CD Baby have created a valuable outlet for independent musicians to promote and sell their music. Now those musicians have one less thing to be incredibly bitter about."
