RIAA, AFIM MAKE NICE

Trade Org Contributes $25K to Association for Independent Music
On the cusp of this weekend’s NARM confab in S.F., the RIAA and the Association for Independent Music (AFIM) have formalized a new relationship.

The trade organization will give a $25,000 grant to support AFIM’s mission as well as to foster joint programs of mutual concern, including combating the challenge of CD-R piracy, international intellectual property protection and the parental advisory program.

Said President/CEO Hilary Rosen: "On behalf of both our major label and independent label members alike, we believe this is a natural relationship we hope will vitalize the voice of the independent music community. At this crucial time in the industry, we hope this alliance will strengthen the mutual goal of building the vitality of the industry and addressing items of common concern between independent and major labels. And it takes my mind off all those nasty messages Don Henley’s been leaving on my answering machine."

AFIM’s members include independent labels, artists, distributors and suppliers. It was founded in 1972 as the National Association of Independent Records Distributors and Manufacturers (NAIRD). The organization has since grown from a group of distributors to encompass all aspects of the independent music business world.

Said AFIM Executive Director Jeanne Oberstar: "We are pleased that the independent voice will be strengthened as a result of our new relationship with the RIAA. This will provide a direct line of communication with our members and enlighten them on issues that may significantly affect the industry and their business activities. And maybe now Hilary will take my phone calls."
