LISA “LEFT EYE” LOPES
DIES IN CRASH—UPDATE

TLC Member Only Fatality Among Seven People

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, a member of the girl group TLC, died in a car crash on Thursday, while vacationing in Honduras. She was reportedly the only fatality among seven people who were in the car when it rolled over. Police are currently investigating the reason for the crash, which happened near Jutiapa.

The tragic death of the 30-year-old singer comes less than a year after the loss of another R&B female star, Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in the Bahamas last August.

In an Associated Press report, Arista President L.A. Reid said, "No words can possibly express the sorrow and sadness I feel for this most devastating loss." Reid helped shape the career of the Atlanta-based group.

Lopes, along with members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, made up one of the best-selling female groups in history. Watkins and Thomas said in a statement, "We had all grown up together and were as close as a family. Today we have truly lost our sister."

Their most recent album, Fanmail, sold over 8 million copies. They produced numorous hits, including "Waterfall," from the Grammy-winning CrazySexyCool LP and "No Scrubs," from their latest. The trio had recently been in the studio working on a new album expected to be released this summer.

Lopes' solo LP, Supernova, was released internationally by Arista but shelved in the U.S. Recently, Lopes signed with Suge Knight’s The Row under the moniker N.I.N.A. (New Identity Not Applicable).

Said Knight: "I would like to express my condolences with love for her family and her fans. What I liked most about her was that she was a rebel. She wasn’t afraid to go against the grain.

"Even though we (Tha Row) cut songs with her, the last thing on my mind is to release any material right away. I think that it is a sad thing to turn tragedy into treasure."

According to reports, her manager has flown to Honduras to bring her body back home to the U.S.

Funeral proceedings for Lopes will be held at 11:00 a.m. May 2 at The New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, in Lithonia (Atlanta), Georgia. A private "visiting" for family members and friends will take place in Atlanta on Wednesday evening. Lisa's mother, Wanda Lopes, and her entire family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the thousands of fans that have sent messages of condolences to them at this tragic time.
