SURPRISE: CLEAR CHANNEL DOMINATES STREAMING MEDIA

What Would You Do with 4 Million Hours of Entertainment?
Where there are programmers programming, be they broadcasters or narrowcasters, you can bet somebody’s going to be there measuring all the casting going on.

This of course, has long been the dominion of the Nielsen Ratings when it comes to television. Now, a Nielsen strategic partner is performing the task for Internet radio—and boy do they have some numbers to report.

Measurecast, founded in 1999, has just released its March Internet Radio Report, which indicates that listening to streaming radio is up dramatically. Specifically, the report reports that Measurecast measured some 17,758,934 hours of programming delivered by the top 10 streaming networks, up from 11,555,369 hours in February and 12,738,552 hours in January.

Naturally, broadcast behemoth Clear Channel is the dominant streaming radio network, delivering over 4 million hours of programming among its 198 Internet stations—the first time that figure has been reached in a single month. The WARP Radio network took second with 2,707,351 hours.

The top single station for the month is U.K.-based Virgin Radio, which streamed 1,248,404 hours of programming to 163,307 listeners. That’s an average of about 7.6 hours per listener. Clear Channel station JazzFM scored the largest audience, streaming 995,159 hours to 212,960 people—an average of about 4.7 hours per listener.

While those stats aren’t exactly massive, the numbers are all up from previous months. Measurecast monitored 1,414 Internet stations in March, which is 61 more than February and 218 more than January.

Measurecast says its server-side audience measurement software, which has patents pending, allows it to record the exact number of streams requested from netcasters’ servers. Other Internet audience measurers include NetRatings and Media Metrix.

You will now awaken, feeling alert and refreshed, but remembering nothing of what you just read.
