LOST HIGHWAY’S ROAD
TO GRAMMY RICHES

Luke Lewis, T Bone and Co. Score Bigtime—and Change the Face of Country
As they say at the highest echelons of the recording industry, Wheeeeee doggies!

The explosion of Lost Highway’s O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack was certainly the surprise music-biz story of the year, and the Grammys acknowledged the impact of this superbly assembled Americana compilation with five trophies (see story, 2/27).

The T Bone Burnett-produced anthology—gathering new and old folk, bluegrass, blues, gospel, field hollers and more into a cohesive whole—earned Album of the Year honors, as well as Best Compilation ST Album, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (the Soggy Bottom Boys, "Man of Constant Sorrow") and Best Male Country Vocal Performance (Ralph Stanley, "O Death"). Burnett was also named Producer of the Year.

But O Brother wasn’t the only winner from Luke Lewis’ new, IDJ-distributed label, which in its brief history has already had a startling impact on country and various roots genres—including rock. The imprint’s other Grammy wins reflect this.

Burnett’s Producer award was also an acknowledgement of his work on Best Traditional Folk winner Down From the Mountain, Lost Highway’s "sequel" ST documenting the incredible O Brother concert tour.

This year’s winner for Best Country Album? LH’s Hank Williams: Timeless, an all-star collection featuring label artists Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams, as well as Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Beck and Hank III, among others, assaying classic tunes by the father of the form.

Speaking of Lucinda, the respected singer/songwriter’s "Get Right With God," from the critically lauded LH album Essence, bagged the Best Female Rock Performance prize (which in turned bagged Bud Scoppa 50 bucks as winner of the office Grammy pool). "We had it in our minds to create a brand with this label," Lewis told HITS a few weeks ago (see dialog, 2/1), "so we got that done."

Would you say Lost Highway is on the board? Pass that jug o’ moonshine and turn up the Victrola, boy!
