ONE-DAY SALES: TOTALLY HITS, DONNELL JONES OFF AND RUNNING

New Artists Dirty Vegas, Avril Lavigne Also Looking Good
Anytime an album like Eminem’s comes around and sells nearly 1.4 MILLION records in a week (after selling 300k the “week” before), there’s something of a warm afterglow, a feeling that anything is possible. And that’s especially welcome right now.

But we can’t all sell a million records in one week. And we accept this.

And it is in just that spirit that we report on what looks to be shaping up as a pretty solid week, according to early indications from national accounts.

To wit: WMG/BMG’s Totally Hits 2002 compilation, featuring tracks ranging from Pink and Alicia Keys to P.O.D. and O-Town, appears to be on track to sell over 100k for the week, possibly reaching as much as 130k, which will make it next week’s top chart debut at a likely #2. This edition appears to be behaving just like the last one, Totally Hits 2001, which of course came out last year.

The next highest chart contender is Arista’s Donnell Jones, whose Life Goes On should log a very solid first week with sales of between 70k and 80k.

Arista is also breaking a brand-new artist in the shape of one Avril Lavigne (think Alanis as an adolescent skate punk), whose Let Go, driven by hit single “Complicated,” looks headed for a very impressive debut in the range of 50-60k units.

Also looking to debut in the 50-60k range is Capitol’s Dirty Vegas, whose eponymous debut is of course “driven” by that Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial with the robotic chick doing her pop-lock thingie to the band’s “Days Go By.” The track also has great radio and a huge video, which, while not the car commercial per se, does feature an Eclipse prominently.

Art is commerce, and they both imitate life, or something. Thank you.
