FROM AWARDS TO REHAB TO SENTENCING TO PROBATION

Why, It’s Just Another Music Roundup Featuring A.J., Tommy, Peter & Fatboy

BACKSTREET IS NOT YET BACK, ALL RIGHT?
Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean has extended his stay in rehab, forcing the group to postpone its Black & Blue tour at least two more weeks. While the tour had been scheduled to resume Aug. 7, the teen popsters said in a press release Tuesday (7/31) that McLean is not yet ready to hit the road. "A.J.'s initial treatment is going very well… his doctors have suggested it would be in [his] best interest to take an additional two weeks in transitional care," said band member Kevin Richardson, adding the tour will now likely resume Aug. 24. "Besides, the weather here in Hawaii is so great right now, the rest of us are in no rush to leave."

RAGE AGAINST THE HONEY-ROASTED NUTS
R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pleaded not guilty Tuesday (7/31) to assault and other charges in an alleged air-rage incident during an April flight (hitsdailydouble.com, 4/23). Buck was ordered to reappear for a Nov. 12 trial and was released on $28,600 bail. Buck is accused of assaulting two British Airways staff members, using threatening behavior, being drunk and causing criminal damage during a flight. "It wasn’t my fault," the recognizable rock star said. "They were showing Carrot Top’s ‘Chairman of the Board’ as the in-flight film."

THE TOMMYKNOCKERS
Prosecutors said troubled former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is abiding by terms of probation for spousal abuse and is steadily working at completing a community service obligation. A superior court judge on Monday (7/30) ordered Lee back to court Jan. 4 for another progress report. At issue was whether Lee was still working at his 450-hour community service obligation. He has logged more than 154 hours so far—mostly at a video store. Lee, who attended the hearing, has completed domestic violence counseling and is no longer required to undergo random drug testing. Said the judge, "Once he understood that we didn’t mean that he should ‘test’ random drugs, he was finally able to comply to the sentence."

WHAT, NO CHRISTOPHER WALKEN?
What could possibly be better than a 14-minute song and dance routine by a group of zombies? According to MTV viewers, a group of quirky dancers performing eccentric routines in front of a movie theater. Fatboy Slim’s video for "Praise You" won MTV’s best video of all time award, beating Michael Jackson’s 1982 "Thriller" video, which took second place. The Spike Jonze-directed video was chosen in a poll conducted for MTV’s 20th anniversary special. Other videos overlooked in the poll included Twisted Sister’s "We’re Not Gonna Take It," Winger’s "17" and Men Without Hats’ "Safety Dance."
