WEEK IN PREVIEW: JAY-Z SMOKES, "HITS" HIT AND ROCK ROLLS
Sales Steady as a Rock As Charity Keeps Charting
Lacking a blockbuster new title to drive those kiddies into the stores and drive overall numbers up, music sales remain unspectacularly "steady" this week—though given these troubled economic times, things are pretty damn good.

Island/Def Jam’s Jay-Z appears certain to retain its album chart throne this week, as J’s Alicia Keys and Arista’s first-week "Totally Hits" battle it out for the second spot. Epic’s Tenacious D is the only other Top 20 debut.

In other retail news, while Reprise’s Enya continues its massive sales run and Arista’s Usher takes a big jump thanks to its second single, most of this week’s sales have a bit of an edge. The kids wanna rock.

Over at Top 40, it’ll be a nice close out week for the "What’s Goin’ On" all-star charity single, as well as Backstreet Boys’ new one—which is a legitimate smash. Also having a nice week with our nation’s brilliant Top 40 brain trust are Lenny Kravitz, Jewel, Sugar Ray and RCA newcomers The Calling. Meanwhile, look for a nice start for Epic’s Shakira.

There are also things happening at Post Modern, JAMZ and Mix Show, but we’re still too emotionally scarred from recent events to interact with those editors. Thank you.
