LIQUID AUDIO: NEW PLAYER RIPS, SUB SERVICE CLIPS

Integrated Capabilities Leverage Exclusive Content And Stuff, Or So We’re Told
Liquid Audio Inc., that dogged and determined granddaddy of the online revolution with roots in digital music going back to 1996—virtual centuries in Internet time—has unveiled a new version of its media player and is on the verge of making a proprietary music subscription service available to record labels, device companies and online retailers for marketing to consumers.

The new player, called Liquid Player Six, emphasizes ease of use with a new interface featuring a download manager and built-in web page, which makes it possible to find music from the same application that plays it.

"One of the major obstacles facing the secure digital music market is making the download experience as simple and straightforward as possible for consumers, said Liquid President Gerry Kearby. "Liquid Player Six is built with the consumer in mind. Both new and experienced users will find it easier than ever to access and download their favorite music – especially after a couple of shots of Liquid Courage, if you know what I mean."

Liquid Player Six supports multiple codecs and formats, including MP3 and WMA, in addition to Liquid’s proprietary format, and supports CD ripping and burning. As part of the new player launch, Liquid has seven featured tracks available for download from Sugar Ray, the Black Crowes, the Eastsidaz, Mudvayne, Drowning Pool and G. Love.

Meanwhile, Liquid today previewed its supscription service technology at the Jupiter Media Metrix Plug.In conference in New York. The service promises easy integration with any existing web site and, as is Liquid’s policy, leaves all branding issues in the hands of partners hosting the service on their pages. Other features of the copyright-compliant service include a choice of streams, downloads, or both; one-click album downloads, playlist sharing and the ability to upgrade selected songs to full ownership rights.

Labels already signed on to provide content for Liquid’s subscription service include independents Alias, Alligator, Digital Hardcore, K, Ras, Rounder and Razor & Tie.
