NEDERLANDER CONCERTS, HOB CONCERTS BAND TOGETHER

Because "Concert" Implies Both "Live Show" And "Working Together"!
Nederlander Concerts and House of Blues Concerts announced Tuesday (9/4) that they are banding together to cross-promote each other's events.

The pact follows a bitter two-year war over the theater in which the two companies exchanged accusations of ineptitude and corruption, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Earlier this year, Nederlander and HOB were pitted against each other as both companies vied for the rights to the Los Angeles' Greek Theatre. Nederlander currently manages and operates the Greek and has had the exclusive right to book concerts there for 25 years. According to the Times, HOB tried to force open the bidding process, noting that the Nederlander family had won a series of extensions on its contract without having to compete.

In March, HOB, which exclusively books the Universal Amphitheatre, filed a suit against the city of Los Angeles, which owns the Greek, claiming that the city improperly rejected its bid. The suit has since been withdrawn.

Naturally, both Nederlander and HOB are trying to protect the assets they have against encroachment by the great hungry beast that is Clear Channel Entertainment, which chose not to participate in the bidding process for the Greek.

"We've chosen not to participate in the Greek Theater bid process because of economics caused by the minimum bid requirements," Clear Channel Entertainment spokeswoman Rachel Gary told the Times.

According to the Reporter, Nederlander's contract for the Greek is up Oct. 31, and the company plans to submit a bid to renew the deal. Under the alliance, the companies have agreed to enhance operational, marketing and promotional activities for the Greek and the Universal Amphitheatre. Additionally, the companies will combine ticket sales at both venues.

"This effort demonstrates Nederlander's and House of Blues Concerts' ongoing commitment to offering the highest-quality live entertainment opportunities to patrons and performers in Los Angeles," said James Nederlander Jr., who is, perhaps predictably, attached to Nederlander Concerts as a VP.

"The programming opportunities for these two world-class venues is unparalleled," HOB President/CEO Jay Marciano told the Reporter. "We believe these are two of the premier indoor and outdoor amphitheaters in the world and will result in substantial benefits for the fans and the city of Los Angeles."

This pairing could have wider implications, as HOB has been fighting its way back into the black after an acquisition of Universal Concerts. HOB has also been a potential target for a buyout by Philip Anschutz’s Concerts West.
