…AND SOME HAVE "GREATEST" THRUST UPON THEM

Turns Out That Santa’s Sleigh Is Loaded With Best-Of Compilations This Year
As the fourth quarter nears its end, the Dec. 4 release date is saturated with greatest-hits collections, best-ofs and essential-hits compilations—just in the nick of time for the season of reminiscing. The 12/4 releases listed below follow on the heels of sets from the Backstreet Boys (Jive), Pink Floyd (Capitol) and Snoop Dogg (Death Row).

Interestingly, only two of these packages—from Ice Cube and OutKast—have been beefed up by new tracks. Apart from Limp Bizkit’s remix gambit, the rest of these collections will sink or swim on their nostalgia quotients alone.

Mariah Carey’s Greatest Hits (Columbia/CRG): Two-disc set expands on the chart-toppers contained on her #1s LP (11/98). Last release, commercial disappointment Glitter, was her Virgin debut. Columbia’s shipping a conservative 400k.

Cher: Essential Collection (Hip-O/Universal): Part of Hip-O’s "Essential Series," this set features early Cher hits such as "Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves" and a live version of "I Got You Babe" with Sonny Bono. Universal released Universal Masters Collection in late October, while MCA released Way of Love: Cher Collection in November 2000; the latter includes 14 of the songs on the new set.

Neil Diamond, The Essential Neil Diamond (Sony/Legacy): Two-disc set includes "Cherry, Cherry" and "Song Sung Blue." Contains six previously unreleased live cuts from his 2001 tour. Last album, Three Chord Opera, was released in July. Neil Diamond: In My Lifetime three-disc greatest hits collection set came out in September.

Ice Cube’s Greatest Hits (Priority/Capitol): Features two new tracks, current hit single, "$100 Bill Y’all" and "In the Late Night Hour," produced by The Neptunes. Companion video collection. Fulfills Cube’s contract with longtime label Priority; 250k shipped. Last Album, War & Peace Vol. 2 (Peace Disc), featuring "You Can Do It," was released in March 2000.

Limp Bizkit’s New Old Songs (Flip/Interscope): Includes P. Diddy remix of "My Way" and "The Nookie" remix by The Neptunes. Other remixers include Timbaland, E-40 and Josh Abraham.

OutKast, Big Boi & Dre Present…OutKast (Arista): Features three unreleased tracks, including current single "The Whole World." 600k shipped. Part of Dungeon Family rap clique, whose debut (also Arista) was released Nov. 20.
