"Every year the MTV Movie Awards celebrate the world of movies with quirky categories, outrageous film spoofs and show-stopping musical performances and, as we are reaching our tenth anniversary milestone, this year should be no exception."
——Van Toffler, MTV/MTV2 President

MTV GOES TO THE MOVIES

"Gladiator" Takes Five Noms As Kirsten Dunst And Jimmy Fallon Make the Host Of It
MTV announced the nominees and co-hosts for the 2001 MTV Movie Awards today. Check with tomorrow’s Billboard Bulletin for a complete list of nominees.

Kirsten Dunst and "SNL"-er Jimmy Fallon have been tapped to host the unorthodox awards show. Oscar winner for Best Picture, "Gladiator" leads the pack with five MTV nominations, including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Action Sequence, with "Cast Away" and "Save The Last Dance" tied with four apiece. Other nom nods (not to be confused with nimrods–those would be the people writing and editing this drivel) for the tenth annual show include Jim Carrey for Best Villain for his role in "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and Tom Hanks and "Wilson" (the volleyball) for Best On-Screen Team in "Cast Away." Winners will be revealed on June 2nd at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and the show will broadcast on the music channel June 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Eric Brockovich," "Hannibal" and "X-Men" were the other films up for Best Movie, while Russell Crowe ("Gladiator"), Tom Cruise ("Mission: Impossible 2"), Omar Epps ("Love & Basketball"), Mel Gibson ("The Patriot") and Tom Hanks ("Cast Away") were up for best Male Performance. Aaliyah ("Romeo Must Die"), Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous"), Jennifer Lopez ("The Cell"), Julia Roberts ("Erin Brockovich") and Julia Stiles ("Save the Last Dance") were nominated for Best Female Performance. Best Comedic Performance nominees are Jim Carrey ("Me, Myself & Irene") and also up for Best Villain, Tom Green ("Road Trip"), Martin Lawrence ("Big Momma’s House"), Eddie Murphy ("Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps") and Ben Stiller ("Meet The Parents"). Breakthrough Male and Female Performance nominees include Jack Black ("High Fidelity"), Patrick Fugit ("Almost Famous"), Tom Green ("Road Trip"), Hugh Jackman ("X-Men"), Ashton Kutcher ("Dude, Where’s My Car?"), Sean Patrick Thomas ("Save The Last Dance For Me"), Aaliyah ("Romeo Must Die"), Erika Christensen ("Traffic"), Anna Faris ("Scary Movie"), Piper Perabo ("Coyote Ugly") and Zhang Ziyi ("Crouching Tiger…"). Best Action Sequence nominees are the plane crash in "Cast Away," the Romans vs. the Huns in "Gladiator," the car chase through the construction site in "Gone In 60 Seconds" and the motorcycle chase in "MI:2."

Nominees were chosen from a poll of MTV and MTV2 viewers. The winners are also chosen by viewers, who can cast their votes online at mtv.excite.com or by calling (900) 288-4MTV (75 per call) beginning April 24 through May 23. Fans can also log on to MTV.com to nominate stars and films for the four new categories: Favorite Line, Best Cameo, Best Music Moment and Best Dressed. Voting in these categories will be from May 23 till show time.

"Every year the MTV Movie Awards celebrate the world of movies with quirky categories, outrageous film spoofs and show-stopping musical performances and, as we are reaching our tenth anniversary milestone, this year should be no exception," said MTV/MTV2 President Van Toffler. "Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to check with accounting to see if we’ve made enough on the 900 number to pay for my new Navigator."
