ELEKTRA’S SINGING IN THE RHONE

Missy Elliott, Staind, "Tomb Raider," Lil’ Mo Fuel Sylvia’s Streak
When it rains, it pours, and right now Elektra Entertainment is experiencing a veritable thunderstorm.

Missy Elliott’s "Miss E… So Addictive," which just came out last Tuesday (5/15), is already surpassing expectations and could well approach 250k in first-week sales, based on reports from retailers around the country.

Next week, Staind's "Break The Cycle" hits the streets hot on the heels of two Active Rock/PoMo hits and retailers saying the album is headed over the 400k mark.

Meanwhile, the star-studded "Tomb Raider" soundtrack comes out June 5, while rap diva newcomer Lil' Mo's "Based On A True Story" hits retail June 26.

Label Executive VP/GM Greg "Foo Young" Thompson says "the label’s summer camp is open for business... Missy's coming back for her junior year, Staind is moving up to the sophomore class and Lil' Mo is entering as a freshman. We've managed create demand and awareness of street date in the consumer's mind on each of these albums, thanks to massive radio airplay."

Elliott's new album was launched with the Urban and Crossover success of "Get Ur Freak On," a remixed duet version of which with Nelly Furtado appears on the "Tomb Raider" soundtrack. Based on its first two days on the street, the record is already surpassing expectations and is headed towards 250k in sales for the week.

Sr. VP Urban Promotion Richard Nash "Your Teeth" says: "Missy stepped up and took her music to the next level. This is her most successful record yet at R&B and Crossover. We’ve re-established her core base. There's also massive video play at MTV, MTV2 and BET."

Staind's "Break The Cycle," the band's second album, has already caused a sensation by racking up two Active/PoMo hits in "It's Been Awhile" and the studio version of "Outside." The latter was already a smash as a live duet between the band's lead singer Aaron Lewis and Fred Durst on the "Family Values '99" album. Observers feel the new album could do upwards of 400k over the counter its first week out, with a #1 chart debut.

Sr. VP Promotion Dennis "The Menace" Reese beamed as if he scored an all-access pass to a Limp Bizkit party at the Playboy mansion. "Top 40 dabbled a little with ‘Outside,’ but I believe ‘It's Been Awhile’ will really explode. The name Staind is a lot more familiar with pop listeners. There's no question this will follow in the footsteps of Creed, Lifehouse and 3 Doors Down. We're bringing this one all the way home. Of course, not at my house because I don't have the room."

Newcomer Lil' Mo has appeared on hit records by Ja Rule and Missy, and already as a following in the rap world anticipating her debut album on June 26.

Says Nash: "She has street credibility in the hip-hop world and is still building a base. We set up the first single, ‘Superwoman Pt. II,’ at clubs and mix shows. The record's now forcing its way onto radio, market by market."

The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack for the movie based on the hit video game starring Angelina Jolie, streets on June 5 in advance of the film’s June 15 opening. The first two tracks—U2's "Elevation" and a new Nine Inch Nails track, "Deep"—are just the tip of the iceberg on an eclectic collection that includes Outkast, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Fatboy Slim, Leftfield. Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada.

Concluded Thompson: "We have all angles covered—rock, rap/hip-hop, the summer blockbuster film with a smoking soundtrack and a hot new artist to jam to all summer long. Now do we get our free AOL accounts?"
