BEHOLD! THE LEADERS OF THE

Magazine Lists Top 50 of the Information Age, Hilarious Prop Comic Carrot Top Snubbed

Vanity Fair released its annual New Establishment list, outlining the year’s "Top 50 leaders of the Information Age"—the doers, movers, shakers and wave-makers. Or just really rich white guys who could crush any of us with the bat of an eyelash.

AOL Time Warner Chairman Steve Case topped the list for the second year in a row, followed closely by Microsoft's Bill Gates and Viacom's Sumner Redstone. News Corp. Chairman/CEO Rupert Murdoch climbed one spot to No. 4, while Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer—the Spock to Gates’ Kirk—rose in the ranks to No. 5.

The list was bound to show some signs of the post-Internet bust, and, predictably, some of the previous year’s honorees found themselves shuffled off the Top 50.

For instance, Yahoo’s David Filo and Tim Koogle were knocked off the list, making room for newcomers such as Sony's Nobuyuki Idei and Bertelsmann's Thomas Middelhoff. General Electric's Jack Welch and former BMG Entertainment chief and BBQ sauce man Strauss Zelnick were also ousted to make room for Vivendi Universal's Jean-Marie Messier—you know how those Info Age chicks love the bald guys.

What brave choices! What startling developments! What a way to move magazines!

Inexplicably, Tom Cruise made the list, but Koko, the sign language gorilla was snubbed, for the second year in a row. Some things just can’t be explained, I guess.

Disney’s Michael Eisner remained on the list, but plummeted from No. 10 to No. 23, which was only slightly better than the fall of Oracle Chairman (and Bill Gates nemesis) Larry Ellison, who dropped from 7 to 22.

But at least neither man hit No. 50. No, that dubious distinction—of making the list…but just barely—this year went to AOLTW’s Ted Turner.
