WINGS TAKE FLIGHT
AT RETAIL

Like George Bush and Dick Cheney with a top oil executive, the music-buying public embraced Paul McCartney’s sentimental journey back to his Wings days in a BIG way.

"Capitol has once again taken full advantage of all the marketing possibilities at their disposal," said Ron Phillips of Amazon.com, who joined the Chief Executive and Mr. Bush in celebrating the record profits being enjoyed by our nation’s great oil producers. "Oil companies are our friends," added Phillips.

Indeed, "Wingspan," the specially priced two-disc ’70s lovefest, scored a resounding #2 debut this week, selling north of 220k, goosed by an ABC primetime special and a massive press blitz.

"Sales should stay strong for a long time to come, as McCartney continues to wield an impressive multigenerational appeal," said Phillips, who added an extra buck to the $2.50 he was paying per gallon to help support "the American way."

Of course, Wings wasn’t the only music giving oil companies a run for consumers’ money. The Interscope soundtrack to "Moulin Rouge" made an impressive #5 bow, thanks to females and others who yearn for a steady stream of Barbra Streisand, Ethel Merman and Judy Garland. There's no business like show business, folks.

Also making a solid debut were V2’s Black Crowes, who came in at #15 this week. Naturally, the band would have debuted in the 30s if Chris Robinson had married Judy Carne’s daughter.

But perhaps the most impressive debut was achieved by Island/Def Jam newcomers Sum 41, who rawked their way to a #18 bow and more than 50k in first-week sales.

Besides Wings and "Moulin Rouge," this week’s Top Five was rounded out by Columbia super-trio Destinys Child at #1, Virgin’s Janet at #3 and Epic’s "NOW Vol. 6" at #4.

But hold on, you Exxon-loving knuckleheads, next week’s chart will feature debuts by Volcano’s Tool, Elektra’s Missy Elliot, Geffen’s Weezer and WB/Reprise’s R.E.M. and Depeche Mode.

"It’s time to drill in Alaska," said Mr. Cheney about this week’s chart. Life is a gas.
