MTV VMAS: 18 GOING ON 360

Lineup And Interactive Plans Will Make Your Head Spin
The word for the 18th annual MTV Video Music Awards is convergence.

This year’s edition returns to the Metropolitan Opera House at New York’s Lincoln Center, scene of the 1999 ceremony, on Sept. 6, with comedian/actor Jamie Foxx hosting. Foxx, who co-stars in Michael Mann’s upcoming Muhammad Ali biopic opposite Will Smith, caught the eye of MTV/MTV2 President Van Toffler with his humorous Janet Jackson tribute at the recent "MTVicon" special in her honor.

Performers announced so far include Britney Spears, Staind, NSYNC, Missy Elliott, U2, J.Lo, Ja Rule and Alicia Keys.

The announced presenters include Aaliyah, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Wahlberg, Christopher Walken, Shaquille O’Neal, Will Ferrell, Jewel, Nelly and Jimmy Fallon.

Top nominee is Fatboy Slim’s "Weapon of Choice," directed by Spike Jonze, with nine nods, including Video of the Year. Elliott, NSYNC and the "Lady Marmalade" foursome of Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil’ Kim have six apiece, as does Dido, though five of them came for Eminem’s "Stan."

This year, the channel is incorporating its 360 interactive philosophy, utilizing its websites and viewer participation to the max.

Aside from the usual "Viewer’s Choice" award voted on by the fans, MTV is running an online "Last Fan Standing" competition, allowing the web audience to pick a lucky viewer to hand out the statue on-air.

A brand-new MTV2 Award will also be handed out, with the winner picked via online voting at MTV.com.

The audience is also invited to predict VMA winners online and sign up for a "VMA Nation" passport that allows audience members to chat and post messages with other fans, while Radio VMA will stream this year’s nominated songs as well as winning songs from the past.

The network is also holding an online sweepstakes offering a trip for two to the awards ceremony.
