"People appear to have wanted something to comfort them and take their minds off of the tragedy. It also appears to be a real statement about what music means to people's lives."

JAY-Z AMONG SIX DEBUTS THAT POWER THE NEW WORLD'S FIRST ALBUM CHART

Top 10 Includes Newcomers Nickelback, Fabolous, Bob Dylan, Mariah Carey, P.O.D. and System of a Down
There are a couple of ways of looking at this week's chart. Both are equally valid.

The first would be the resumption of a now-trivial concern.

The other would be the realization that music appears to have a lot of meaning following a week when all forms of entertainment were relegated to "meaningless."

Be it a desire for normalcy, a form of therapy or just something the kids HAD to have, Americans bought music this week.

"People appear to have wanted something to comfort them and take their minds off of the tragedy," said Wherehouse's Bob Bell. "It also appears to be a real statement about what music means to people's lives."

That said, this week's chart included six debuts in the Top 10, including Island/Def Jam's Jay-Z, which proved the dominant title with sales well north of 400k. IDJ also provided this week's #2 debut with Roadrunner's Nickelback.

Amazingly, Js Alicia Keys continued her old ways in the new world with a #3 performance, followed by #4 debut Fabolous (Elektra) and #5 bow Bob Dylan (Columbia), still railing after all these years.

This week's Top 10 was rounded out by a #6 debut from Mariah Carey (Virgin), a #7 debut from P.O.D. (Atlantic), Linkin Park (WB) at #8, "Now Vol. 7" (Virgin) at #9 and #10 System of a Down (Columbia), which would have entered at #1 last week...if we published a chart.
