DAVE MANNING LIVES!!!

Staind Still Rules, Child is Farther, "Rouge" Sees Green and Tool Is Cool
"The Elektra team has delivered another winner!"—Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

When esteemed blurbmeister Dave Manning speaks, people listen. And this week, the all-knowing Dave is speaking about the HITS Top 50.

So what if he’s an imaginary critic invented by a Sony Pictures marketing exec who needed someone to rave about "The Animal" in print ads? Is he really any different from any of the brain-numb retailers we talk to every week? Indeed, the fact that Dave Manning is imaginary makes him far more interesting and intelligent than any retailer we know.

Plus, we don’t have to pay him to talk to us.

"‘Moulin Rouge’ really took a healthy jump this week!" Manning enthused.

What the Dave-man is talking about is this week’s Top Five. Elektra’s Staind continues to dominate, followed by Columbia superstars Destiny’s Child (3-2), the surging Interscope "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack (8-3), Volcano’s Tool, which remains solid at #4, and Epic’s never-going- away "Now Vol. 6,"making the move back up to #5.

"It’s nice to see records from Columbia and Epic, since they’re owned by Sony and, apparently, I’m also owned by Sony," said Manning.

But it’s not just the Top Five that has Dave raving like he’s a figment of some marketing exec’s feverish imagination. Check out the staying power of Elektra’s Missy Elliott, whose sales hold strong at #6, and Columbia’s Train, which climbs from 12-9.

Add to that yet another resurgence for MCA’s Shaggy (20-10), healthy sales increases for WB’s Linkin Park (13-11) and Jerry Bruckheimer-like blockbuster numbers for the label’s "Pearl Harbor" ST (30-12) and you’ve got enough to please even the most fictional critic.

"Jerry Bruckheimer has delivered another winner!" crowed Manning.

But wait, Dave. What about next week?

"Next week’s chart will deliver another winner, with debuts from Radiohead, Jessica Simpson and Nelly’s band St. Lunatics!" exclaimed Manning who, according to Sony officials, is hung like a donkey.
