ONE-DAY SALES: "SCARECROW" HEADED FOR GREEN ACRES

Dang. Them folks shore love their Garth Brooks.

So much, in fact, that a day after the release of his latest, Scarecrow (Capitol Nashville), reports from national accounts indicate that roughly 600k rabid Brooks fans will have forgotten all about that whole Chris Gaines thing and purchased the album by week's end.

Of course, Brooks' series of Coast to Coast Live television specials beginning tonight on CBS is something of a wildcard in what would otherwise be our usual strictly scientific, flawless extrapolation of first-week sales figures, and we are obliged to tell you it could make the above prediction less than 100% accurate. That would be a shocker.

But the truth is, we all know that Garth Brooks likes to put on a SHOW, and chances are his concert special will dig the spurs into the hide of his sales momentum and make the silvery steed of his first week in stores run at a full gallop. Or not.

Joining Brooks in the "new releases selling by the buttload" heap is Colombian diva/international superstar Shakira, whose Laundry Service (Epic) is following in the footsteps of fellow Latin crooner Enrique Iglesias (who held this week in the Top 5 after last week's strong debut) and looks on track to sell about 200k.

Also moving off store shelves with the dogged determination of the undead is Rob Zombie's The Sinister Urge (Geffen/IGA) which also appears headed for a first-week tally near 200k.

Meanwhile, this week's #1 chart debut, Britney Spears, should see her Britney (Jive) continue to move, and though her sales snake may be about half as long when this week is through, it should still have enough fangs to make her a solid #2 behind Brooks.

And then there's Michael Jackson, who last week blew the skeptics out of the water with a near 400k debut for Invincible (Epic) and this week held on to #3 on the chart with about 193k in sales. The broadcast of his 30th anniversary Madison Square Garden concert last night is something of a wildcard and could have a positive impact on this week's tally.

However, because our usual strictly scientific, flawless extrapolation of the numbers is compromised by the unpredictable impact of concert broadcasts on the marketplace, we are obliged to tell you that the above prediction may be less than 100% accurate.

That would be a shocker.
