JANET GETS BANNED IN SINGAPORE
"All For You" Pulled From Shelves; Michael Fay To Be Blamed, Caned

Janet Jackson’s new Virgin release "All For You" is apparently not for everyone—that is, according to state censors in Singapore.

The chart-topping release is currently being held up by government censors in the city-state known for its rich cultural heritage and bare-ass canings. Local distributor EMI Singapore, which voluntarily submitted the album for review, has launched an appeal after authorities decided the album could not be sold because of "explicit sexual lyrics" in the song "Would You Mind."

"The appeal is still in process," a spokeswoman for the Films and Publications Department told Reuters. "We haven't come to a conclusion yet."

"Would You Mind" features the lyrics "I just wanna touch you, tease you, lick you, please you, love you, hold you, make love to you." With the lyrics getting more and more explicit after that.

Jackson’s previous release, "The Velvet Rope," was also banned in Singapore, before being released with the objectionable tracks removed. Of more than 300,000 music titles brought into Singapore every year, importers voluntarily flag about 6% to the censors. About 20 titles are banned every year.

The album was briefly available in some stores before being yanked from shelves or tucked under the counter. Of course, curious fans can still hear two-minute samples—and read the lyrics—of Jackson’s latest tunes on her website.

"You have to give people more credit," said Stephen Tan, editor of local music and entertainment magazine BigO. "I don't think anybody is going to be led astray or...titillated to such an extent by an album."

As evidence, Tan pointed to the fact that few people in Singapore were titillated by the name of his magazine.
