Many people were right.
"Janet has proven to be much more than a diva. She’s now a pop icon, and this huge sales debut is the proof," said Hastings’ Mike Fuller, who tends to be a bit of a diva himself. You know, whining, sniveling, complaining, demanding, nagging… Oh, sorry, back to our story.
Besides Virgin and Janet’s monster #1 debut, Curb/Atlantic’s Tim McGraw scores a solid #2 bow (albeit with less than 50% of Janet’s dominating units), while Def Soul/IDJ rapper Case debuts at #8. Other Top 20 bows include Universal’s venerable Bee Gees at #13 and Roadrunner’s Fear Factory at #17.
Behind chart queen Janet and cowboy McGraw in this week’s Top Five are Epic’s "NOW Vol. 6" at #3, Amaru/Death Row/Interscope’s 2Pac at #4 and MCA’s Eveready Bunny Shaggy at #5.
Rock is well represented in the Top 10, with Top Dog/Lava/Atlantic’s surging Uncle Kracker at #6, DreamWorks’ Lifehouse at #7 and Columbia’s Train in the #10-spot.
All that said, eyes and wallets have already turned to next week’s chart, where Columbia’s Destiny’s Child is poised to rule—with HUGE numbers.
"We’re thinking that Destiny’s Child could be even bigger than Janet, and that’s saying something," said Hastings’ diva Fuller, whose process of thinking about next week’s chart reminds of us of a chimpanzee pondering a tangerine.
And speaking of chimpanzees, it took 100 of them at 100 computers to write this story.
