CHARTS AND ONE-DAYS:
WHO CARES?

Plus, Cancellations Continue
As expected, in the wake of the yesterday’s devastating tragedies, apathy reigns supreme about last week’s HITS Album Chart and yesterday’s one-day sales picture.

Sept. 11 was shaping up to be one of the biggest release dates of the year. But with the nation in turmoil, numbers are scarce, polling of stores in most cases is incomplete, store closings were rampant and it is clear that consumers weren’t shopping yesterday.

Even if the one-day numbers were complete and correct, it’s next to impossible to extrapolate on them. This week is like no other in history. Projecting sales numbers has always been based on precedent, and this week is without one.

That said, Roc-A-Fella’s Jay-Z should debut at #1 next week. For records such as Mariah Carey, Nickelback, Fabolous, P.O.D. and Babyface, where they debut is anybody’s guess. There just doesn’t seem to be that many people interested in guessing. Most retail outlets that were closed yesterday will probably re-open during the week. Will consumers return in force? Maybe by next week they—and we—will care again. Right now we just don’t.

Many entertainment events have again been canceled or postponed nationwide, including most shows promoted by Clear Channel Entertainment, the largest promoter in the country, for the second consecutive day.

Two Clear Channel-promoted shows, Backstreet Boys and Lynyrd Skynyrd, will go on tonight as scheduled. Each group will be donating at least $10,000 in ticket sales to help kick off the Clear Channel.com Relief Fund. The Fund officially launches tomorrow and will take donations online or via the mail at ClearChannel.com Relief Fund, PO Box 659512, San Antonio TX 78265. The fund will benefit the American Red Cross, and appropriate New York and Washington, DC Police and Fire Department funds.

Weezer has decided that it wants to play tonight’s scheduled concert in Oakland as well, according to the band’s website.

Concerts from Tool, Stevie Nicks, 98 Degrees, Powerman 5000 and others have all been delayed. U2, meanwhile, has postponed planned ticket on-sales scheduled for this coming weekend.

On Tuesday, practically all U.S. entertainment events were canceled, including all events handled by CCE and House of Blues Concerts.

Other cancellations included concerts from Madonna, Janet Jackson, Tool, Godsmack, Maxwell and Ben Folds.

At press time, Madonna—who canceled her Tuesday night (9/11) performance at Los Angeles' Staples Center—was still due to perform at the venue as scheduled on Thursday and Friday, according to a statement on the singer’s website.
