This Roundup Of Music News Goes Down Smooth, Like A Rocky Mountain Stream

RETURN OF THE ROCK
Stop the presses. Hard rockers Tesla have come out of retirement and are warming up for a 2001 outing with a mini-tour of the Golden State. Pollstar reports the reunion is due to the prodding of KRXQ-FM PD Pat Martin, who convinced the five members—all of whom had been working on other projects—to perform for the station's Halloween concert. "Pat was so convincing that he actually managed to patch things up to the point where the guys said, ‘Yeah, sure, let's do it,'" band spokesman Victor Somogyi told Pollstar. "Besides, we couldn't refuse the blow and the hookers."

SHOULDN'T HE GET AN AWARD JUST FOR BEING "THE BOSS"?
Bruce Springsteen received a humanitarian award from the NAACP. "Humanitarian is too big a word for what I do," he said Sunday (12/3) while accepting the Humanitarian Community Service Award for contributions to the community. Springsteen, who was acknowledged for his song about the 1999 police slaying of Amadou Diallo in a hail of 41 bullets, told about 150 people that he felt "empowered" by music. As he left the stage, Springsteen admitted, "When they first told me about the award, I thought I was just getting it for putting up with Clarence Clemons all these years."

NORMALLY, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE BACK OF THE VIDEO STORE TO RENT "DOLLY'S SPLASH COUNTRY"
Dolly Parton has selected "Dolly's Splash Country" as the name for her new multimillion-dollar water park located close to Dollywood in East Tennessee. Parton combed through 16,000 entries to find a winning name for the park, which is scheduled to open May 19. John Torres of Ronkonkoma, NY, submitted the name while visiting Dollywood this summer. He and his family will be awarded a prize package including a canoe signed by Parton, a "splash party" for 10 and VIP status for a photo session with Parton at the water park's grand opening. Torres, who can't swim, was hoping the prize package included being saved in the wave pool by Parton's pair of flotation devices.

ALL DOGZ GO TO HEAVEN
Rapper DMX has sold his memoir, "A Dogz Life," to HarperCollins. DMX, who'll star in Dimension's fourth installment of "The Crow" and opposite Steven Seagal in Warner Bros.' "Exit Wounds," plans to chronicle his troubled childhood, multiple arrests and career as an actor and rapper, Variety reports. "The messages in his songs are positive," said Manie Barron, publishing manager of the Amisted Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. "What's wrong with smoking dope, shooting rival gang members and abusing beeyaaatchs?"

PUENTE GETS KUDOS FOR CHARITY WORK
Tito Puente will be honored posthumously for his charity work by the Recording Academy's New York chapter. The group has named Puente, along with musicians B.B. King and Diana Ross, actress Bernadette Peters, producer Phil Ramone and record executive Frank Military, as recipients of the 2000 Heroes Award, which will be presented today (12/5).

LOVERBOY BASSIST PRESUMED DEAD
Public and private searches have been called off for Loverboy bassist Scott Smith, presumed drowned after being swept overboard by a giant wave that washed over his 37-foot sailboat off the coast of San Francisco Thursday (11/30) afternoon. The band's other members, Paul Dean, Matt Frenette and Doug Johnson were said to be in seclusion in Vancouver after visiting with Smith's family at his home in British Columbia. The Coast Guard called off its hunt Friday (12/1) afternoon, but a private search continued until dusk on Saturday.
