UMG TO EXPAND BLUEMATTER

Physicists Warn That Matter Cannot Be Created Or Destroyed, No Matter What Color It Is
Universal Music Group said Thursday it will expand its Bluematter digital format and hopes to offer a secure system that protects artist copyrights by the end of the year.

Two weeks ago, the world's largest record group began trials with around 60 songs from artists like Blink-182, George Benson and Luciano Pavarotti.

"We will ramp it up in the fall in the U.S. and the U.K. and Holland,'' Seagram CEO edgar bronfman',390,400);">edgar bronfman',390,400);">Edgar Bronfman Jr. told reporters Thursday. "Bluematter was only launched two weeks ago but we expect to expand it to thousands of tracks over the next couple of months.''

Reuters reports that Bronfman's comments came as lawyers for song-swap company Napster were preparing a brief due today in its court battle over copyright protection.

Bluematter is expected to be the foundation for new digital music businesses, including a joint venture Universal announced with Sony Music in May to start a subscription-based digital music service.
