has made good on its threat to offer its new single, "Original Prankster," for free downloads. The single off the upcoming album "Conspiracy Of One" is available on MP3.com. The band is also sponsoring an online contest that will make a fan $1 million richer. Said MP3.com Vice President of Content and Community Sam Wick: "This is a hugely successful band that clearly recognizes the power of distributing new music on the Internet. By allowing users to stream and download ‘Original Prankster' more than a month before the release of their album, the Offspring are rewarding loyal fans and potentially attracting new listeners from all over the world." AREN'T THINGS BIGGER IN TEXAS?
Texas Instruments has unveiled its latest Internet Audio solutions. The company's fourth generation of digital signal processors feature advancements in battery life. Its DA250 can help Internet audio players extend battery life by 50-70%, giving up to 70 hours of playtime with two AA batteries. The system offers a dual Multiply and Accumulate chip and a Universal Service Bus on a single chip, reducing manufacturers' costs and the size of the product. Said Vice President of Internet Audio Business John Van Scooter: "The DA250 product is the future of Internet Audio hardware with the most advanced battery-efficiency and product feature set available. DVD-LIGHTFUL SOUNDS
Warner Music
has become the first major music company to release albums in ultra-high-fidelity DVD-Audio. The first titles to come out on the multi-channel audio format include releases by the Stone Temple Pilots, Natalie Merchant and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, as well as a selection of compositions by Beethoven, Strauss and Ravel. Upcoming releases include discs by the Corrs, Deep Purple, Metallica and Buena Vista Social Club. All albums will offer Advanced Resolution surround sound, Advanced Resolution stereo and compatibility with standard DVD-Video players. WMG promises to offer an attachment that lights your bong very soon.

IT'S LIKE THE M.A.C. COUNTER WITHOUT SCARY DRAG QUEENS
ARTISTdirect.com has relaunched. The new site is focused on utility and broadband music entertainment, offering a database of more than 100,000 artists, downloading and streaming of authorized music, CD and merchandise sales, original broadband content and participation in an active fan community. New features include more than 700 genre listings and ARTISTdirect Auctions, which is co-branded with eBay. Bidding on ARTISTdirect stock is... oh, you fill in the damn joke.

Panja Inc. has teamed with Music Choice to deliver commercial-free digital music to consumers via Panja's home Internet appliances. The alliance will allow Panja system owners to receive Music Choice's CD quality music 24 hours a day. Music Choice distributes music via cable, satellite and the Net. The Panja 1000 gives access to Internet-based content to audio and video components without using a PC, and enjoys a diet of bamboo and eucalyptus leaves.

PARTY AT THE PATENT OFFICE
The U.S. Patent Office has granted Liquid Audio multiple patents for its master quality lossless data-compression technology. With it, content owners can compress music for delivery and archiving while maintaining an exact match to the original. The technology ensures no loss of audio quality and can reduce digital audio storage and transmission costs. A VINING ADDITION
Former Windham Hill Group President Steve Vining has been appointed CEO of digital audio developer Euphonix, Vining's resume includes serving as Vice President/GM of BMG's U.S. Classics as well as a stint at ECM, where he groomed the Grammy-winning world music outfit the Chieftains. Vining has been recognized by Variety as a visionary executive and by Highlights For Children for having the educational mag's longest-running subscription.

Shira Perlmutter
has been named Time Warner Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property Policy. Perlmutter will be responsible for global and domestic policy relating to intellectual property issues. She served as head of Policy and International Affairs at the U.S. Copyright Office, was a chief negotiator of the 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization Internet treaties and advised Congress on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. Perlmutter received an undergraduate degree from Harvard in 1978 and a J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1983. In primary school, Perlmutter was a hall monitor and would snitch on classmates who chewed gum in class.
