GRAMMY WINNERS HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY AT RETAIL
U2 And Steely Dan Experience
Biggest Sales Spikes After Wins
Grammy winners U2 and Steely Dan were the recipients of the biggest sales boosts after last Wednesday night's ceremony, with retailers saying totals were up three to four times the normal amount on those titles.

U2's sales almost quadrupled yesterday (2/22) at Best Buy after the band's three nods, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance. Ironically, the band's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" long-player was released after the Grammy deadline date of September 30 and will be eligible for Album of the Year honors next year. Thanks to his controversial performance with Elton John and visibility, Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" almost tripled in sales.

Best Buy's Kevin Engler said, aside from those, he didn't expect a tremendous lift for other titles. "Santana last year was a sweeping phenomenon which crossed all demographics. We don't have anything like that this year."

Meanwhile, Amazon.com reported that Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature," the surprise winner of Grammy's Best Album award, along with three other nods, was one of its most-requested titles, with sales jumping 4,500%, and its on-site ranking going from #92 to #2 in a single day. The e-tailer said their other big winner was U2, whose one-day sales more than tripled, while Eminem's doubled, "Best New Artist" winner Shelby Lynne notched a 50% increase and Paul Simon's Grammy-nominated disc received a 75% bump.

Drooled Amazon's Ron Phillips: "All in all, it was pretty good, but nothing as exciting as Toni Braxton's dress…Hey, I didn't even know she had a record out."

Yeah, but at least one paper towel dispenser in a Staples Center ladies' room is now empty.
