SANTANA, MAN, MIGUEL RULE
LATIN GRAMMYS

New Hip, Heart Valve, Prostate Qualify 73-Year-Old Ibrahim Ferrer As Best New Artist

Mana, Luis Miguel and Santana each took home three trophies at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last night (9/13).

Santana and Man won record of the year for "Corazon Espinado" from "Supernatural," which also won for rock duo or group vocal. Man also won best pop performance while Santana won best pop instrumental.

Miguel's "Amarte Es Un Placer" won album of the year and pop album. He also won best male pop performance.

Marc Anthony's "Dimelo (I Need To Know)" picked up song of the year.

Most surprisingly, 73-year-old Ibrahim Ferrer was named best new artist.

The awards went to a wide spectrum of genres and artists with Juan Luis Guerra, Fito Paez, Emilio Estefan Jr. and Shakira all taking two awards.

Meanwhile, mariachi superstar Pepe Aguilar and officials with Fonovisa, the largest Latin record label in the United States, boycotted the event to protest what they saw as a bias in favor of big-name performers more familiar to American audiences.

Aguilar and the music label Fonovisa argued that there weren't enough popular Mexican styles—like norteno, tejano and ranchera—nominated for the biggest awards or invited to perform.

"I'll bet they'd shut their mouths if we decided to pony up payola money they requested," an insider offered. "You'd think lessons would be learned."

HITS Magazine is still trying to determine if the awards actually hold any merit or if they were organized so Sony chief Thomas D. Mottola could throw a huge celebrity-packed shindig on the West Coast.
