A.K.A. Six Degrees of Britney Spears
SEARCH ME BABY ONE MORE TIME:
Those zany Lycos users can't get enough of that Britney Spears. Once again, the teen dream topped the Lycos 50 as the site's most-searched topic. Dragonball, the CBS yawnfest "Big Brother, " football, Pokemon, Olympics, the Firestone tire recall, the NFL, NSYNC and tennis nymph Anna Kournikova round out the Top 10. Once again, hitsdailydouble.com was excluded due to bad attitude.

CALLING ALL TAPEHEADS:
Somewhere between looking at shots of Spears' "Teen Choice" appearance, Lycos unveiled Lycos VideoCenter. The free Web site allows users to create, edit, store and stream videos online. This allows aspiring auteurs to share videos, send video e-mails and post videos to the Web. Now, family and friends alike can see what that donkey was really doing at your bachelor party.

LIKE A VIRGIN:
Akamai Technologies, Inc. announced Radio Free Virgin will utilize its FreeFlow SM Streaming service for its Internet radio platform. Akamai's FreeFlow already provides broadcast contest to more than 4,200 servers. Said Akamai Vice President Media and Entertainment Services Paul Campbell: " Akamai is excited that Radio Free Virgin recognizes the strengths of our technology, and we're eager to put our services to work to help them fulfill the promise of digital radio. Free virgins, like Britney Spears, are hard to come by. You usually have to buy them dinner first."

STAR TREATMENT:
Artists have found a new community on the Web. StarPolish is designed to educate and empower artists, offering advice, resources, information on current issues and rewarding deserving artists. Said President and CEO Vivek J. Tiwary: "There has long been a need for a Web site dedicated to providing comprehensive business support to emerging musicians—a place to get detailed information about the music industry at no cost, while also bringing the most deserving artists to the attention of music fans and industry execs. Unfortunately, this is not it." Its advisory board includes Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello, former Minutemen and current indie god Mike Watt, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Artemis Records CEO Danny Goldberg. Britney Spears was reportedly too busy getting a pedicure to participate.
