EverAd has secured the rights to distribute free, downloadable songs from Priority Records' and Spitfire Records' artists such as Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Alice Cooper and Deep Purple on its PlayJ.com Web site, according to Webnoize. The deal includes current singles and catalog tracks. EverAd lets music fans download copy-protected songs and the only price they pay is embedded banner advertising. (In the songs, that is, not the heads of the consumers. Well, not yet anyway.) EverAd shares ad revenue with the record labels and earns a commission on albums when listeners click through to e-commerce partners CDNow and Amazon. Currently, about 400 companies advertise through EverAd. Despite rumors to the contrary, not one death or incident of brain damage has been linked to embedded banner ads. Not yet anyway.

Sony Music Entertainment Europe and Microsoft are teaming up to develop Web-based music video "channels" to stream high-quality audio and video on various and sundry European Microsoft Network and Sony Music sites. Naturally, content will stream in Microsoft's Windows Media format—you were expecting maybe Liquid Audio?—and will be available for both broadband and slower connections. Next month, two channels will debut: one in German targeting Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the other targeting Sweden, in whatever sexy language those people speak.

And speaking of strategic partnerships, Yahoo has expanded its existing agreement with Ticketmaster's Citysearch to allow Yahoo customers to purchase tickets through Yahoo's entertainment guide. As part of the expanded relationship, Ticketmaster will provide consumers with Citysearch's local content, including restaurant and movie reviews and hotel information. "By expanding our relationship with Ticketmaster Online-Citysearch, we will provide our users with Citysearch.com's relevant quality original content. As well as the ability to easily access their vast ticket inventory of arts, entertainment, family and sports events," said Matt Rightmire, Yahoo! vice president and general manager for media and entertainment. "Now, we're just one porn partnership away from becoming ‘full-service.'"

THE HEALING POWER OF SPAM
In support of Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA) introducing bill HR5275—called the Music Owners' Listening Rights ActMP3.com has initiated the Million Email March, an e-mail campaign through which consumers can contact their congressmen. "MP3.com powers this grassroots movement," said MP3.com's Executive VP of Government Relations Billy Pitts, "that is if you can accept a corporate push for legislation as being ‘grassroots.'" Pitts explained that the movement's focus was to encourage the enactment of legislation that will "allow consumers to store and then listen to the CDs they purchase—anywhere and anytime." The Digital Future Coalition, made up of 50 businesses committed to advancing new technologies, has also lent its support to the "march." "We're hoping," Pitts added, "that this e-mail campaign is as successful as that ‘pay per e-mail' thing that Microsoft initiated, which, by the way, I haven't been paid for yet."
