MP3.COM’S $150 MILLION LESSON

There’s Money To Be Made In Licensing

MP3.com, the other popular digital music website, is jumping into the other end of the music licensing business. The netco, which paid out $150 million in licensing fees to the Big Five for its My.MP3.com streaming locker service, is taking advantage of the 800,000 songs on MP3.com by starting its own licensing program.

Artists who pay a $25 annual fee will have their songs included in a database marketed towards producers, directors and advertising agencies. Enableyourmusic.com is the exclusive licensing service provider, handling the nitty gritty and assisting music supervisors "in finding music that has been shown to be effective in targeting a specific demographic or geographic area." Folks, we couldn't make this stuff up.

If a song is chosen, the artist has the option of using EYM for negotiating terms or choosing different representation. EYM will also offer royalty administration services, if necessary.

"EYM is proud to be an integral part of the creation and implementation of this innovative, artist-centric program," EYM CEO Steve Love. "Now, what's half of $25 again?"
