EU PARLIAMENT APPROVES NEW COPYRIGHT LAWS
Today, the European Parliament approved new copyright laws aimed specifically at preventing piracy through the Internet and web technologies. The new legislation, called the European Union Copyright Directive, revises outdated European Union copyright laws to cover issues involving digital and online capabilities.
It allows rights holders to prevent illegal copying of copyrighted works by so-called advanced technologies, such as encryption.
Though the recording industry hails the new laws, some labels, artists and record industry lawyers feel the new EU rules are still not enough to end online music piracy. Consumer rights groups gave the EU's "copyright directive" a thumbs-up, saying it found the balance between artists' rights individual liberties.
Thankfully, there is no mention of Napster in this story.
