MADONNA & EMINEM
INVADE MTV EUROPE

Superstars Lead With Two Nods Apiece in Stockholm Ceremony
No, it wasn't the Nobel Peace Prize, but divine diva Madonna and rap star Eminem led the winners at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards at the Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, with two awards apiece.

Madonna took home the Best Female and Best Dance categories, with Eminem taking home the trophies for Best Hip Hop and Best Album ("The Marshall Mathers LP").

The rest of the winners included Ricky Martin (Best Male), Jennifer Lopez (Best R&B), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Best Rock), Backstreet Boys (Best Group), blink-182 (Best New Act), All Saints (Best Pop), Moby "Natural Blues" (Best Video), David LaChapelle "Natural Blues" (Best Director), Robbie Williams "Rock DJ" (Best Song) and Westlife (Best UK & Ireland Act).

The first MTV Europe "Free Your Mind Award" of the Millennium was presented to OTPOR, a grassroots student pressure movement founded in 1998 to counter Slobodan Milosevic's oppressive regime. OTPOR representatives Branko Ilic and Miljana Jovanovic accepted the prestigious award from distinguished French actor Jean Reno at the ceremony.

The event will be seen on all of MTV's channels in Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, Russia and the US in 326.2 million households in 139 countries with additional airings through international syndication.

The 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards featured 12 performances from the world's highest profile artists including Madonna, U2, Backstreet Boys, Bomfunk MC's, Guano Apes, Ronan Keating, Moby, All Saints, Ricky Martin and the Spice Girls.

Highlights of the show included Jennifer Lopez flying on to the stage in a custom-built plane to perform the worldwide premiere of her new single "Love Don't Cost A Thing," and a sizzling performance of Robbie Williams' and Kylie Minogue's smash hit duet "Kids," with Kylie descending to the stage in a giant silver rocket.

Guest presenters at the star-studded ceremony included Anastacia, Aqua, Bruce Dickinson, The Cardigans, Savage Garden's Darren Hayes, Dolce & Gabbana, Eiffel 65, Guy Ritchie, Jason Priestley, Sonique, Tia Carrere and Chef from The Muppets.

The show was hosted by Wyclef Jean, who opened the show with a rap based on the music of Abba. Other performances included Moby's stunning rendition of "Porcelain," and the Spice Girls' dramatic rendering of "Holler." U2 opened the show with "Beautiful Day," while the upbeat grand finale was provided courtesy of Best Male winner Ricky Martin, who stunned the audience with a performance of "She Bangs," accompanied by a bevy of underwater dancers.
