UNIVERSAL SOLVES NELSON RIDDLE

The appointment was made to maximize opportunities between music and film at Universal and open up a parking spot on the Disney lot.

When she takes over the dual role in January 2001, Nelson will become the first executive to oversee both areas of music at a major entertainment company. For UMG, she will oversee the development and production of all soundtrack albums for the company's U.S. labels, including releases from Universal Pictures as well as other film studios. For Universal Pictures, she will manage all aspects of development and production of feature-film music and make popcorn for studio screenings. Sr. VP Motion Picture Music Harry Garfield will report to Nelson under the new structure.

Nelson is currently President of Film Music for the Walt Disney Motion Picture Group. Prior to that, she spent more than 10 years at MCA Records, most recently as Sr. VP/GM, where she was responsible for creating the label's soundtrack division.

Commenting on the appointment, Horowitz said: "Kathy's talent, experience, exceptional musical sensibilities and special relationships with the creative community in both the film and music worlds make her the perfect executive for this unprecedented position. And she promised to get me a cameo in ‘Pulp Fiction 2.'"

Added Nelson: "It is very exciting to be coming back to Universal at a time when both companies are enjoying unparalleled success at the box-office and on the music charts. I also look forward to re-joining Zach, working with Doug [Morris] and all the talented executives at the Music Group as well as with Stacey and her incredible team at Universal Pictures. And just as soon as technicians remove me from this block of ice, I plan to tell them just that."
