BLIND DATE WITH DESTINY
Just two hours after Metallica played a top secret gig at L.A.'s House Of Blues as part of Miller Genuine Draft's "Blind Date" series, an unidentified man fell to his death out the 8th floor window of his room at the Hyatt across the street. The man, whose name has not been released, was not one of the 1,000 contest winners flown from all across the United States to the event but was an independent contractor who had been hired to work the event. Early speculation was that alcohol played a part in the tragedy, especially since contest winners were awarded SEVEN free beers apiece. A spokesperson for Metallica expressed sorrow at the tragedy but was quick to deflect responsibility away from the band, MGD (who paid the band $800,000 to play the gig) and the venue. "Obviously," said the spokesperson, "we think Napster has something to do with this."

TTD MUST GO BACK TO WISHING WELL
Despite rumors that Terence Trent D'Arby would step behind the mic permanently, the surviving members of Australian band INXS have nabbed vocalist Jon Stevens. The former Noiseworks frontman, who also recently collaborated with Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, will serve as a temporary replacement for Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide nearly three years ago. The band is currently playing dates in Australia and New Zealand, and a spokeswoman for the band stated, "the future of INXS remains under review, but we promise not to leave fans hanging."

Rapstation.com, the Internet assault created by Public Enemy frontman Chuck D, has selected a winner in its "Power to the People and the Beats" contest. Twenty-year-old Florida rapper Benefit has walked away with the $5,000 grand prize. Benefit's self-titled debut album—which features the track "If I Owned A Midget"—is available on his own So Sick Records label. Rumors that the album features a guest appearance by OTR (original tiny rapper) Billy Barty went unconfirmed at presstime.

12 INCHES ALSO AVAILABLE
Like two peas in a pod, nothing goes together better than rock and porn. That's why HardCorps Entertainment had to issue "Deep Porn: The Compilation," a musical ode to America's favorite pastimes. Kid Rock contributes the instrumental "F.M.A.," featuring moans from "My Baby Got Back 9" star Midori. The disc also includes Lordz Of Brooklyn with Rebecca Wild doing "Titty Bar," 2 Live Crew's Brother Marquis, and Girls Against Boys' sex kitten Eli Janney and Missy on "Hard Organ." All that's missing is Ron Jeremy's rendition of the Billy Squier 1981 classic, "The Stroke."

EXITING THE LIVING YEARS
Former Mike + The Mechanics singer Paul Young died Saturday (7/15) of an apparent heart attack in his Cheshire, England, home. Young was 53. Sadly, Cliff Richard, Kylie Minogue and Lulu are all still alive.

DON'T FIGHT, GIRLS, YOU'RE BOTH PRETTY
Members of the band Creed have responded to the ongoing trash-talk about their band by Limp Bizkit frontman fred durst',390,400);">fred durst',390,400);">Fred Durst by issuing a statement through their publicist. "Until now, Creed hasn't felt the need to defend itself against fred durst',390,400);">fred durst',390,400);">Fred Durst's numerous on-air tirades," the statement reads. "We feel that Fred has worn out his welcome as an artist spokesperson for our industry." The statement also reinforced that Creed frontman Scott Stapp was still serious about a Stapp-Durst boxing match. "Our only request is that it be a paid event with the proceeds being donated to charity." Stapp later rescinded the offer when he found out that Durst wasn't the tiny guy who rapped with Kid Rock.

NO PLACE TO CALL HOME
In related Limp Bizkit news, the band is still searching for a venue for the Los Angeles stop of its Back to Basics tour. The L.A. shows were scheduled for early August but may be pushed back several weeks if a location cannot be found by the end of the week. At presstime, a 3,000- to 5,000-seat arena had yet to sign on for the show, which also features Cypress Hill as an opener. Attempts to get the band to play in the HITS food court were not taken seriously.
