"Whaddya mean Azoff owns all that?" Don Henley

"WORK FOR HIRE" MAY HAVE ARTISTS WORKING FOR FOOD

House Committee To Hold Hearings On RIAA Amendment To 1976 Copyright Act
These days it's hard to tell whether or not artists and the RIAA are supposed to be on the same side.

Late last year, the industry trade organization introduced an amendment to the 1976 Copyright Act that would reclassify recordings as "works for hire," meaning that after 35 years, the labels have rights to recordings forever instead of the rights reverting to the artists. The House Intellectual Subcommittee—which is not an oxymoron, really—has now agreed to hold hearings on the bill after artists spoke out against it.

"I have no pension. I have no 401K. All I have is the expectation of getting the rights to my songs... Whaddya mean Azoff owns all that? ” said Eagles drummer and solo artist Don Henley. “That and the inevitability of a 'Hell Freezes Over Again' tour. Oh yeah, and this huge chunk of cash in my bank, and in my pockets, and invested in Walden Pond condominiums.”

The bill was originally intended to clarify copyright law as it applied to films, since they are more of collaborative project. However, the RIAA lobbied to extend the bill to cover music although many albums are a singular effort.

The bill is currently moving along, though Henley and other artists, including Sheryl Crow and Billy Joel, continue to raise a stink.

Would this story be considered a work for hire?
