Lucasfilm Says Dr. Dre Used THX Deep Note Without Permission

George Lucas' Lucasfilm, Ltd. is suing Dr. Dre for using the "THX Deep Note" as the opening sound of his multi-Platinum "Chronic 2001" without permission. The sampled bit in question is familiar to millions of moviegoers—it's the synthesized crescendo climaxing the THX promo spots that immediately precede showings of all feature films using the Lucasfilm audio technology.

The suit against Dre, his Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records alleges that Dre asked permission to license the sound, was turned down by Lucasfilm—"unequivocally denied," says the suit—then used it anyway. It was filed last Friday (4/14) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Meanwhile, Dre has given Napster a Good Friday (4/21) deadline to clear his shit outta their directory—an edict the Napsters may have trouble complying with—before proceeding with a copyright infringement suit in which he's the plaintiff rather than the defendant.

But the new suit may complicate matters for Dre, as Napster founder shawn fanning',390,400);">shawn fanning',390,400);">Shawn Fanning is said to have a telepathic link with Lucas that allows him to wield a light saber while blindfolded.
