MY AIMSTER IS TRUE

New Program Aims To Fill Napster Void
For AOL IM Users
Instead of "You've got mail," America Online users may soon hear "You've got downloads." That's because a new instant messenger-compatible file-sharing program has been unveiled.

Aimster adds search and retrieval functions to AOL's IM service, which already allows users to send individual files to one another. Users can create secured "buddy lists" for file sharing.

The developers of Aimster claim their file-sharing program offers more security than the centralized servers of Napster, where user names can be tracked using software like Media Enforcer, or decentralized networks like Gnutella where end users don't know the parties who are offering up files for sharing

Right now, Aimster is available only between AOL instant messenger users, and is not yet compatible with other providers. Support for ICQ, Yahoo Messenger and MSN are expected by Oct. 1.

The application works with the Windows 95/98/NT platform.
